The Maradaine series is really different from the other series I have read. Unlike most series, the story are told from the point of rich and powerful people. Maradaine stories are told from the average joe point of view, and each series is a different genre.
The Maradaine novel is basic fantasy series.
The Maradaine Constuabulary is a police drama.
The Street of Maradaine is a heist drama.
The Maradaine Elite is a political thriller.

The story is about Dayne, a member of an old order (like our ole Teutonic knight). Who got caught into a political web of assassination of members of parliament, and his attempt to save as many life as possible.

The book keep you glue to the pages, and keep you guessing on who is the bad guys in it. The interest point in the book are the main villains in the book are not really a bad person, just someone whose has been abused by the political system, and trying to have the the powerful politician to hear their grievance and being dupe by some lord and ladies using them to gain their own political power. It is also a reflection of our own political system in the United State.

I can not wait to read the next book, when Dayne is going be in Constabulary book to unravel some of the mystery of Maradaine government.

This book seems written for a possibly more juvenile audience than other Maradaine novels. It's still a fun book but the characters, circumstances, and backstory seem to skate along the surface more than swimming the depths of the story's world. I would compare this book to something closer to Pierce's series' (which I also liked) that are intended for a younger audience. I'm not sorry I read it, just not what I hoped for based on other Maradaine books.
Dayne Heldrin believed in The Way of the Shield (paper from DAW) and the Tarian Order. He wanted to protect people with his sword and shield and mostly save lives. But Parliament decides who will advance. He and his mentor had been sent to rescue a kidnaped noble child. Alas the child was hurt and his mentor killed. Returning to Maradaine, the city in which all Marshall Ryan Maresca fun tales are set, the master of the order informs him that he will never advance to adept. Then a group of wannabe revolutionaries decide to try to kill members of Parliament, and he and Jerinne, one of the initiates become involved in trying to stop the plotters, whose real leaders are very high in status. Firstly, the characters in this latest Maradaine novel are all over the spectrum as far as ideologies, societal ranks and personal honor codes, which makes for a diverse narrative for the main plot and gives the reader someone they can identify with, even if it's not the main character (but for me, it was. Dayne is amazing). Maresca has a way with writing politics in such a way that it is actually interesting and gets the reader invested into the world of Maradaine. And that's just the world building aspects in this novel! There's so much more to it than that.
The characters are well written, with decent depth even on the most minor of characters. Without going into spoilers, I was surprised to find myself initially thinking of a particular character as a joke to being moved by their philosophy by the end of the novel. Each character has their own unique motivations and are all drawn into the plot, determined to hold their own views until the end. There isn't a clear black and white in this book when looking at the protagonists versus the antagonists, which makes it far more interesting as the story finishes, leaving the reader to draw their own conclusions.
In summary, if you haven't started any Maradaine novels as of yet, this is a good one to jump on board. You won't regret it.
The Way of the Shield is fantasy at its best! Lots of moving pieces- and the way he writes makes you feel as if you are in the story watching the sword fights and political drama from within. Loved this book!
Storyline had a judicious taste of current events which actually made the plot believable. But I have reservations - I like the make up of Dayne (MC) but do not think I like him. He is a Paladin...almost to a fault.
Another work by Maresca about which I can only struggle to find adequate superlatives.

Dayne is not Veranix, or Minox, nor one of the Holver Alley Cree. He's a much more upbeat, if slightly worried hero. Many, most authors even couldn't accomplish the same tone shift; much less do it in the same setting.

Old loves, new proteges, a dream dying on the vine... And then we hit chapter 4. The breathless pace is exceeded only by the quality of the yarn.
Another wonderful story about life in Maradaine. I cannot wait for our hero, Dayne, to encounter Veranix or the Holver Street Boys or and of the other wonderful characters who inhabit this bustling city. Sometimes it seems like whatever we try to do goes wrong and that is what happens repeatedly to Dayne Heldrin throughout this story as he tries to help everyone. Oh, and the ending, with the twist, I didn't see that coming. Another well written story with characters readers will relate to.
