This is a magical retelling that will certainly keep the attention of any adult, but is appropriate for a child of any age. One thing I particularly love is the tomboyish characterization of the main character. I think that young girls could learn a lot from Rosie, about love, independence, and friendship. It does take place in a fairytale land, so even readers of Fantasy will have suspend their disbelief. By which I mean, it is fully part of the fairy tale world - there is plentiful magic, enchantments, and animals can speak. At the same time, Rosie and the other characters don't act wooden and stereotypical.
Another item of note was that it kept my interest from the first page. Robin McKinley has a great writing style which really sweeps the reader away.

McKinley is a writer of world-class status. You can see this from other reviews that other people have written. So many of us look up to and applaud her! And it is true, as others have said, that no one else writes quite like McKinley does. Her characters are real, they have thoughts (often many at a time), emotions, decisions to make, motivation, struggles, hardship, victories, sorrow and joy.
You feel that these characters could just walk right out of the book and into real life and not be out of place. McKinley has a great sense of human nature. She also has a great grasp on language. She has both interesting wording and a feel for telling a story that captivates your attention and keeps you wanting for more. McKinley's characters and stories will stay with you long after you have finished reading. Personally, I wish that she had written more about Damar and Rosie's country. It really is no wonder that Robin McKinley won a Newberry Medal for "The Hero and the Crown". Which leads me to the next point.
McKinley's books are listed in a children and young adult catagory. This confounds me utterly. I am in my 20's and a college student and I still glean knowledge, hope and encouragement from these books! I believe that any of Robin McKinley's books, particularly "The Blue Sword" "The Hero and the Crown" and "Spindle's End" should be mandatory reading for people ages 10-110.
Now for the story, it seems a little boring at first. Almost as though it were a fairy tale for children. But stick with the story! Once Katrina gets to the Naming of the Princess, things start to pick up. I can't tell you any more because then that would reveal too much of the plot of what happens at the Naming. But what you need to know is that this is NOT the traditional Sleeping Beauty story. Only a few elements are taken from it (spinning wheel, evil fairy, etc.) But the rest of the plot, characters, animals and actions are straight from McKinley's imagination.
She is an author for all time, a true storyteller with the gift of imagination and originality. Once the plot gets going, it never dulls. There is not always a ton of action and hopeless quest and the story is all the better for it! There are humerous scenes, touching, brave, adventurous and joyful. The characters are heartening, close-knit and full of believability.
So, buy this book! You'll get much more than your money's worth and will be inspired to get even MORE McKinley books!
This is my first experience with Robin McKinley's writing, and I was very pleasantly surprised indeed.

This book has a definite "fairy-tale"-ish feel to it, which I really enjoyed. I really enjoyed the depth of world building, and its characters.

Unfortunately, the book was a little slow. It felt like it dragged in places, and although it has an exciting last hundred or so pages, there's a big chunk in the middle where not much happens whilst the character's wait for Rosie's dreaded 21st birthday.

I liked the ending, although I felt maybe it was all tied up a little too neatly. I did get a little confused about what was going on at times (I felt like I thought I knew what was happening, but wasn't quite certain) and I did start to get a bit lost by the large amount of characters --- particularly the animal characters. I spent a good few chapters mistakenly thinking one of the characters was a horse, only to find out that it was actually a dog.

I really loved the atmosphere and fairy tale feel of this book though, and enjoyed it a lot.
Everyone knows the story. A royal couple, after years of longing, have a beautiful baby girl. All their subjects and the fairies and woodland creatures come to celebrate the birth. But one evil fairy, miffed that her invitation didn't come, storms the party and curses the baby to prick her finger and fall asleep forever.

In this imaginative retelling, Robin McKinley gives an alternative story. When the evil fairy, Pernicia, casts her spell, a fairy named Katriona is there. She won the lottery in her distant, small village to come to the name day of the new infant. She takes the baby in that moment of the curse and returns with it to her village. The trip takes weeks and the two are helped along their journey by the wild animals they encounter; the female badgers and rabbits and foxes providing the milk a baby must have.

The baby, Briar-Rose, is raised by Kat and her mother. They give a story about it being the baby of a distant cousin who needs a home. Rosie grows up in the village with no idea about the royal blood she carries in her veins. Instead, she becomes a horse vet as she has the ability to talk with all the animals she encounters. It's a good life, surrounded by love and joy but has the ruse worked? Will Rosie escape the curse laid on the babe twenty-one years ago?

This is a joyful book, full of spells and coincidences that turn out to push the story along. Rosie is no wilting sheltered princess. Instead she is a woman who knows her own mind and knows how to fight when it is needed. Robin McKinley has written several fairy tale retelling novels. She has won the Newberry Award for young adult fiction along with other awards. This book is recommended for fantasy readers.
