Salvation Anne Osterlund Books

I am already a big fan of Ms. Osterlund's books. I not only buy a copy for myself but I buy copies for the library where I work. One of the best things about Osterlund's writing is I have no problem recommending her books to both the teens I work with or their parents. She has a way of writing amazing chemistry between the main characters while keeping them PG friendly.

That being said I was really excited when I found out that Salva one her main characters is Mexican. I don't really try to read any particularly ethnicity of books but whenever I run across one that has a Hispanic character I find myself having a special affinity to that book. No different than someone from New Jersey reading a Janet Evanovich book. It gives me a little extra happy.

Salvation is a story about Salvador and Beth both of who are trying to do what they can to get out of their poor struggling surroundings.

Both are striving to use education as their way to escape. I love the slow build to their relationship. The long flirt is always fun. The most important part of the story is that it has a very strong message about what it takes to be true to yourself and yet follow your passion this is especially true in so many lower income neighborhoods. Education is often seen as hindrance to getting a paying job right away and I loved the fact that both Beth and Salva realized that education was actually their salvation...see what I did there come on a little cheesy but it works right, and again a great romantic book with a good message slipped in is always a plus...

Salvation Anne Osterlund Books Reviews

THE STORY
Salva Resendez has it all - he's the quarterback of the football team and the student body president, and everyone loves him - but his Mexican immigrant family has very high expectations for his future. When he gets a failing grade on an AP English paper, he asks his classmate and the person with the highest grade in class, Beth Courant to help him figure out where he went wrong with his material. They begin meeting regularly, his grade improves, and they become friends. Beth has had a crush on Salva since middle school and she knows that he can reach further and go further than even he knows. As they become closer and their friendship evolves into something more, she pushes Salva to not settle and go for what he really wants for his future. But when a tragic accident happens one night and Salva sinks into his guilt, that future is at stake unless Beth can pull him back from the edge.

THE COUPLE
Salva and Beth started out as barely acknowledging each other. He's part of the popular crowd and Beth his known as the "walking disaster area." But when Salva becomes desperate for help in his AP English class, he asks for Beth's help. That's how it all started. They begin meeting regularly and they become closer - first as friends, then as more. I really liked how their relationship progressed. It happened in a really real way. They went from passing each other in the hallway to spending time studying together to finally acknowledging how they feel for each other. I also really liked how Beth supported and encouraged Salva to not settle, to reach for what he really wanted. They do have some obstacles to overcome, though. Particularly the people that Salva knows - his family and his friends. Beth isn't who they expected him to fall in love with. But Beth really shows how much she loves Salva when he ends up in the hospital. She's the only one who can get through to him. These two have a very supportive relationship and I think that is a very good foundation for their relationship in the future.

THE ROMANCE
Both Beth's and Salva's families are on the poor side, so neither has much money to be able to go out and do things like a normal boyfriend and girlfriend. But they do have some moments that I thought were really important to the development of their relationship, as well as have a romantic element to them. I have two favorite scenes - the Romeo and Juliet scene and the park scene. Their first kiss happens during the Romeo and Juliet scene, and I think that was the real turning point in their transition from friends to more. And the park scene is where they finally confess, particularly Beth's confession. These moments happen in a natural kind of way, but they also have a real importance to their relationship. I just really enjoyed how real these two are together.
Very nice story and characters. Interesting story. Had a lot more potential if it had been edited a little more. But good read. This is a novel you read a couple of pages a day. 3.5 stars.
Read this book in 11/2 days, loved it!, great story, my feelings are everywhere, but right where they need to be in the end )
This book was beautifully written and so easy to read, it kept me interested from beginning to end. What a lovely young man Salva is and his interaction with his friends is heartwarming. Teary and smiley moments throughout. Thank you to Anne Osterlund it was a wonderful read and to the book clubs that recommended it.
This book was really great !!!I was pleasantly surprised!! I loved Beth !! I think she is one of my favorite book girls !! She was an unorganized mess that told it like it is !! I love that she always told Salva the truth, even if that is not what he wanted to hear !! Salva was such a great guy , you could not help but fall in love with him !! I loved the very over the top Romeo and Juliet scene !!! My favorite part was Salva reciting some poetry!! You'll know when you get there and you want to read it over and over again !! I love the dynamics to all the different relationships, things are not always as they seem.!! There were parts I saw coming from a mile away, but other parts I did not see coming and were shocking !!! All in all a great book with really great writing !! The perfect popular student and the quirky mess of a girl !!! There was a little bit of a role reversal here than the typical YA romance and I loved it!! First love there is nothing sweeter !!
