I am not a biker yet I stayed up most of the night to finish this book. Even thou the story occurred about 50 years ago the story is topical. There is much secrecy and corruption in all levels of Government. Mr Irving portrays the horrors of war when our servicemen come home but they can't live normal lives because of the nightmares and flash backs to a time the mind cannot accept. The main character tries to live a normal life but when you survive and your friends do not, it is difficult. The characters as true enough that I think they will be living with me for awhile. The suspense builds and is sustained. One action in the book bothers me. A very long time female friend is killed violently right in front of the 2 main characters and they show little or no emotion or feelings for her.

Courier Freelancer Terry Irving 9781909223790 Books Reviews

This was a great political thriller and Rick was a credible character all the way through the story. After serving in Vietnam, Rick picks up his life as a motorbike courier for a News Channel in, Washington DC. I will not go into the story, suffice to say that he finds out pretty quickly that he's embroiled in a game of cat and mouse with his life in danger because of the film he is carrying.

This is a fast paced story with some great twists in the plot and supporting characters to compliment Rick. It is written with authority and Mr Irving demonstrates all the way through that he knows exactly what he is talking about, regarding the 1972 era, when shameful allegations led to a President's downfall. He is well versed in the ins and outs of the news industry, informative yet not overpowering with facts. He is a gifted story teller and I shall be keeping an out for more of his work.
You might need to suspend your disbelief, especially if you ride a motorcycle.
His BMW R50 (ancient) is a road rocket. Not.
Early on, when he had the bike in a sideways slide and released the rear brake, the bike straightened up. In reality, it would have pitched him up in the air in a classic "high side".
I do remember, however the mesh bags of news film being flown around the country. I shot news film for a while, had it processed out of house, and then edited it myself for the evening news show. All the TV station scenes were pretty accurate.
Yes, motorcycles. And it works.

Well-written thriller set in an unusual framework --- a news courier in DC during the start of the Watergate "era". As the story progresses, two things become clear a) the author knows how to write a story (good plot, good characters, good narrative, just generally well-done); and b) the author (appears to) very much enjoy riding a motorcycle.

I don't know the accuracy of the descriptions of riding, but they are detailed, descriptive, and convincing enough to make me wish I knew about riding motorcycles. So it contributes a lot to the story.

I will be reading this author's future novels.
I enjoyed reading the book mostly because the story was compelling. Built around historic events, with vivid descriptions of Washington in 1972, the fictional elements were interwoven seamlessly. A lot of the enjoyment came from reading a literate book that was, as far as I could tell, without the bad spelling, bad grammar, wrong words and stupid errors that I have come to expect in modern e-books by new authors. The writer's professional background and work experience obviously were mostly responsible, but the editing and proof reading seems to have been first rate. Bottom line A fine thriller worth reading.
The B-Roll is film shot to provide backup details and other items that may enhance the main story, which in this case is an interview with a whistle blower. Set in Washington, DC during the Nixon years, Irving has plotted out a conspiracy that should rank highly with similar scenarios. The whistle blower dies when his house explodes; the news crew dies in an automobile “accident”; the film suddenly just disappears, except for the B -Roll, which is in the hands of the courier. Using a motorcycle to get around, he skirts DC traffic and nearly forgets the film, jammed into a carry bag. Others, however, have not forgotten about the film and decide to kill the courier and destroy the film. Filled with great chase scenes.
This is a "hold on to your hat" fast paced thriller from start to finish. I'm a mystery/thriller junkie and this fit right in there with the string of Baldacci, Patterson, Steve Berry and Lee Child series on which I regularly feast. My biggest regret is that, this not being a series, there was not another one to pick up.
Irving has manged to capture the style and culture of this period in our history and exploit it to it's fullest. The beginnings of the open distrust and disappointment directed toward our government today can be traced to this period, and Irving brings a slice of that right to us in "Courier". Here's hoping that another offering is not far off.
First, I need to say that this type of book is not what I typically read. I'm glad that I made the exception.

Rick, a war-haunted Vietnam veteran, is working as a motorcycle courier for a television news organization in DC on the early 1970's. Watergate is heating up and investigative journalists are looking for whatever can be found to take down the current White House resident. And here we are, 45 years later and we do something ourselves in a similar situation.... How about that?

Long story short, Rick ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time and ends up carrying some crucial evidence that some people would kill to keep from coming to light. That's where the adrenaline kicks in. As a former motorcycle rider, I loved the detailed chase scenes as Rick tries desperately to keep one step ahead of the people trying to kill him. Damn, that guy can ride!!! The motorcycle descriptions were terrific too. The comparison between the BMW and the Kawasaki were right on target. Details make the difference and knowledgeable details are the best kind!

If you want to relive an era most of us would like to forget, this book is the perfect way to do it.
