This review is for the entire series and will be posted to each book. I flipped between the Kindle and audiobooks for each book, depending on my circumstances, but the audiobook narration was so good that sometimes I’d listen even if I was in a position to read. I really loved this series and wish it had and was getting more press. Hey you word of mouth folks! Talk about this series! As an avid fantasy reader, I’m a bit embarrassed that this series has been around since 2012 and I hadn’t read it yet. Also, unlike some, it doesn’t feel aged.

This is a big and truly epic series and each book was over 600 pages.

While there were some elements that I struggled with, for the most part these books hit me right in my epic fantasy heart. There was the coming of age, the new powers save the world thing, the quest, the evil ruler, the warrior woman, the evil church thing and other fantasy tropes, but I never felt that they were overdone. Pretty much every major character seemed like ‘real’ people to me—flaws, irritants and all. And they stayed true to who they were. While the ‘good guys’ weren’t all good—the bad guys were god-awful evil. Some right away and others with a slow and dreadful spiral into pure malevolence. I let out more than one verbal OMG and just as many laughs.

One of the things that I enjoyed was the fact that the series took place in a world that had enough shades of our own world to give the narrator and story-telling a (somewhat stereotypical) base offering the user solid frame of reference. IMO, it enabled the writer to skip long expositions of world-building. And the narrator took full advantage of that, doing a brilliant job on the Indian, Germanic, Italian another accents used—at least to my American ear.

The cast of characters was large and I had to go back and forth a couple of times to make sure I had the ‘right’ one, but it seemed like almost all of them got their HEA or just reward as appropriate. This man knows how to wrap up a series because things got REAL in the last book! It’s so enjoyable to walk away satisfied from a series end. You don’t have to love what happened to your favorite character, but you should walk away full. 😊 There may have been a couple of omissions, but I’ve filed them away in my head for my next read just in case I ‘missed’ them. Because yes, I’ll be reading this series again. For now, I’m moving to his sequel to this series—The Sunsurge Quartet (unfinished as of today, 8/2018).

The only think I could say that I didn’t enjoy in this book were the sex scenes, and I was thankful that they’d tapered to ‘not much’ by the last books in the quartet. But that may just be me. I never thought that fantasy needed sex scenes explained—I’m pretty much a fade to black girl for books and movies. The other adult aspect to note was the use of adult language, which frankly seemed realistic without being overdone.

All in all, I look forward to more from David Hair and have added him to my list of followed authors.

Ascendant Rite The Moontide Quartet Book 4 eBook David Hair Reviews

A satisfying end after for a long and deeply engaging ride. Yes, it takes time to get a grip on the geopolitics of Urthe and the system of magic is far from straightforward, but isn't that what big fantasy epic is supposed to be about? The characters are rich and multilayered, and they all carry enough substance to make you believe they do not only exist in order to push any particular plot point forward.
Ascendant's Rite is a final book in this quartet, and it does a great job of closing all the open issues and questions that have built through the last three books. The characters face difficult choices, and while there are happy endings in places, there are just as many bittersweet, and just plain depressing endings that give this book a dose of "realism" that the fantasy genre has finally seen more of in the last few years. There are even some openings left for a future antagonist to rise, or a quest to be had, so these characters could all see a return.
Truly epic scale of world building, spanning not just a medieval Europe type land but also middle east and India with world religions. Very intriguing plots and twists. I would put this up there w LOTR and WoT series. First book took me a while to get into, author throwing lots of strange names and places at you real fast but it's so worth it in the end.
This series starts off slowly but the author finds his voice and pace in this his 4th book . I hope he gives us a fifth. If you don't have it ,I highly recommend the audio book . The performance was great and it's hard to believe one man was able to give us so many unique voices and with so much flavor. Enjoy
Several years ago I read the first book in this series and made the suggestion to the author that he needed to include an appendix that included the religions, different people living and dead and other things that would make it easier for the readers who had read the earlier book month or years ago and I am happy to see that he followed up on the suggestion. Even with this addition I am glad I waited until all the books were available to finish reading this series because so much has happened and still continuing and I would have hated the wait between books.

I have to say that I really enjoyed this series. One of the things that had me worried was that I knew the author had planned a quartet and since I assumed that it would be the twins that Ramita bore that would save the world I was worried how the passage of several years would be handled. Would we just skip years as the twins grew to an age where they gained control of their gnosis perhaps picking up the story as they started their training in how to use their abilities? How and who would keep them and Ramita safe from all those seeking them? These scenarios didn’t even take into account the Scytale of Corineus and all the different factions that would seek to have it in their possession. I am so happy that my fears were unfounded; the author has written these books so the stories flow seamlessly and the action is non-stop. There is war and treachery everywhere; and there are those that make alliances just to make themselves stronger so that they can have the outcome they want and then they intend to double-cross they allies and take everything for themselves. There is so much going on that being to read the next book in the series as soon as finished the preceding one made the series more enjoyable for me.

I am surprised that there aren’t more reviews out there for the series because it is very good. If you are a fan of epic fantasy then you should give this series a try.

4.25/5 STARS **I want to thank the author and/or publisher for providing me with a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review; all opinions are mine.**
